The cement board on the rear wall can be installed on non combustible spacers they are available commercially can be made from copper pipe or even cut from strips of the cement board and installed vertically.

Measure the dimensions of the backer board so there is at least 16 inches that extends out from the stove in the front and on both sides. Place your stove onto a piece of 1 2 inch cement backer board. This will center the stove. Safe wood stove installations require a heat shield that will prevent heat from the wood stove from creating a fire hazard in the building materials that form the exterior wall.

Hardi cement board is also designed to have ceramic porcelain or stone tiles installed over it to cover and beautify the heat shield after it is installed. Larger hearths are suggested for allowing room for wood storage and reloading the firebox. I think 1 2 concrete board only has a r rating of 2 or 3 which is much too low if attached directly to a wood floor without an air space. Hardi cement board is an inexpensive solution that will form the foundation of an effective heat shield for any application.
